Jamal Lewis, one of six newcomers to Vicarage Road this summer, was acquired by Watford on loan from Newcastle United.
Lewis, 25, appears to be a wise acquisition for Watford. But due to a calf injury that has kept him out of action, the Northern Irishman has yet to make his club debut.
With just five points from their first five games, Valerien Ismael’s team is currently in 18th position in the standings. The Hornets have had a difficult start to the season and have yet to win a championship game.
When Lewis eventually makes a comeback, Watford will benefit greatly. Do the Hornets, however, have the option to purchase the Newcastle United player?
a choice to purchase?
Watford announced the loan acquisition of Lewis from Newcastle United and the existence of an option to purchase the 30-cap Northern Ireland player.
However, the conditions of the choice to buy are still ambiguous, and the prospective cost is not disclosed.
Lewis’ current market value, according to Transfermarkt, is €6 million (£5.16 million). It may be a costly move for Watford if the Magpies decide to sell since they would want to repay the £15 million they spent on Lewis in 2020.
Watford might start off with a fee of between £5 million and £15 million, however it is unclear whether they would be willing to spend that much on a single player.
Lewis, however, has a chance this season to show everyone what he is capable of. He continues to be a fine player, but Newcastle’s recent influx of new players has knocked him down the pecking order.
This weekend, Watford will play again against Birmingham City, although it is unclear how long Lewis will have to wait before making his debut.
