Swansea City’s sporting director Paul Watson claimed that the Welsh club was unable to match Leeds United’s offer to acquire Joel Piroe.
The Whites were aggressive in how they approached their summer business, strengthening their side to the point where it appears to be stronger than previous season in a number of areas.
In order to bolster their offense, the team made a significant investment in Joel Piroe of Swansea City on a permanent basis.
How much was Piroe?
Piroe signed a contract with Leeds for a base value of £10.5 million; but, if Leeds take advantage of certain contract add-ons, that fee may increase to £16 million.
His debut for Leeds couldn’t have gone better; he scored on his debut at Ipswich Town to help the team get off to a winning start with their first league victory of the year.
What caused Swansea to sell?
When Leeds sought the signing, Piroe had less than a year left on his Swansea contract, and a new contract was reportedly on the table, according to Swansea sporting director Paul Watson.
Speaking to WalesOnline over the weekend, he said that his team’s inability to match with Leeds’ financial heft, which includes parachute payments:
“Joel and I had a lot of chats. I’ve spoken with a lot of the players. I’ve made it clear that I’ll do two things: I’ll be honest and fair.
The goal was to attempt to keep Joel, but the football club’s structure didn’t allow for what he and his representatives wanted.
“We believed the ripple effect would prevent us from destroying that structure. Along with that, an offer was received. We had an internal valuation, and in some contingents, it was surpassed.
“When you are getting a return on an investment, he said he wasn’t going to sign a new contract and you can’t compete with a club who has parachute payments, that all came to a point where you say what do we do, we get the best for the football club,” the person said.
We can obtain something that we can later reinvest in and strengthen through time.
Do you like Piroe?
After successfully completing a takeover, the club needed to reassert their presence in the Championship by demonstrating their ability to inflict serious injury on rivals.
The 49ers’ desire is evident by their signing of one of the top forwards in the division from a team striving to get up to the top six.
This makes our team far more equipped to compete for promotion than it was previously when combined with other hires that we’ve made.
