Chris Sze was awarded a new three-year contract by Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney after ‘greatly impressing’ him in practice.
The 19-year-old is the newest Academy graduate to sign a long-term deal at the DW.
And according to his management, he is expected to continue to make appearances for the first team as he advances.
We are thrilled that Chris has elected to stay with the football team for an additional three years, added Maloney.
“He’s a fantastic young talent who will only become better as he gets more experience.
Chris deserves his opportunity in the first squad this season, and he has highly pleased me since I returned to the football club.
He has a promising future ahead of him, and I am forward to work with Wigan Athletic to assist him further his growth.
Just two months into his second year as a scholar, Sze—who had previously been with Liverpool—joined Latics as an Under-12 and soon after signed his first professional deal.
In September 2021, he made his Carabao Cup debut against Sunderland as a senior. He appeared five more times that season and scored his first senior goal in the Papa John’s Trophy matchup against Shrewsbury.
He also won the Michael Millett Academy Player of the Year award that year, and he led the Under-21s in scoring for the second year in a row last term.
He has played against Wrexham, Northampton, and Carlisle this season.
Sze joins other Academy members who have recently signed new contracts, including Tom Watson, Joe Adams, Kieran Lloyd, Dylan Dwyer, Ethan Mitchell, Abdi Sharif, Youssef Chentouf, Joe Rodwell-Grant, and James Carragher.
